It started the day I became a father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When my daughter was diagnosed with autism, I entered a world that so many families know all too well \u2014 meetings, evaluations, services and systems that require you to share deeply personal information just to get your child the support they need. You learn quickly that access often comes with a cost: your child\u2019s data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you trust that it will be protected.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n<div class=\"newspack_global_ad scaip-1 fixed-height\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-caf9af3267-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But today, families are asking harder questions. Where is that information going? Who has access to it? And how much control do we really have once it\u2019s shared?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These aren\u2019t abstract concerns. For parents like me, they are real, immediate, and deeply personal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, Pennsylvania took action to address those concerns. Gov. Josh Shapiro signed executive orders to limit how disability-related data is collected and shared, making it clear that sensitive personal information should not be distributed beyond what is legally required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maryland should take notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear, Maryland has taken steps in recent years to strengthen general data privacy protections. But there is still a gap when it comes to disability-specific data and how it is shared across systems.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n<div class=\"newspack_global_ad scaip-2 fixed-height\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-2bd992b9b0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because here\u2019s the truth: families are already stretched thin navigating education systems, healthcare providers, and government programs. We shouldn\u2019t also have to worry about whether our children\u2019s information could be misused, over-collected, or shared without our full understanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data can open doors, but it can also expose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For children with disabilities, the stakes are even higher. Misused or poorly protected information can lead to stigma, bias, or missed opportunities. And for Black families, who have historically faced inequities in education and healthcare systems, trust is not automatic \u2014 it must be earned and protected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why Maryland must act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need clear, proactive policies that:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n<div class=\"newspack_global_ad scaip-3 fixed-height\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-dc2e0e383b-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 Limit data collection to what is truly necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 Ensure families know how their information is being used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 Protect against unnecessary sharing across agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 Include parents and advocates in shaping these decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not about fear. It is about responsibility.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-4    \">\n<div class=\"newspack_global_ad scaip-4 fixed-height\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-ca419f6974-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a father, I will always advocate for my daughter. But as a community, we should not have to fight individually for protections that should already be in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pennsylvania chose to act. Maryland now has a choice to make.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will we protect our families, or wait until trust is already broken?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, the answer is simple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because advocacy didn\u2019t start in a policy meeting.
