{"id":6402,"date":"2024-11-03T08:34:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-03T08:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=6402"},"modified":"2024-11-07T08:39:13","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T08:39:13","slug":"where-you-get-your-news-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=6402","title":{"rendered":"WHERE YOU GET YOUR NEWS FROM?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-oq8b0114\" class=\"thtTy -PN3w mcSBi iCJIo\" dir=\"auto\">By Dr. Julianne Malveaux<\/p>\n<p class=\"thtTy -PN3w mcSBi iCJIo\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"wnQOX\">I was sitting on a bench outside the Los Angeles Union Station, waiting for a friend to pick me up.\u00a0 I had taken a lovely and relaxing train ride from San Diego to Los Angeles and was basking in the afterglow of a few hours untethered to purpose, people-watching, ruminating, and enjoying the higher than usual heat.\u00a0 I was all spread out on the bench, and startled when a seasoned sister asked if I minded moving my things so she could sit.\u00a0 So I moved them and she plopped down and began talking, even as I tried to read at my book.\u00a0 Her monologue commanded attention, though, so I put my book aside to listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-1pvq9116\" class=\"thtTy -PN3w mcSBi iCJIo\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"wnQOX\">Sis talked about all the deals she got in the garment district and proceeded to show them to me.\u00a0 A purse she got for eight dollars, a shawl, and a romper for her granddaughter.\u00a0 Then she saif, I should not be shopping, but it\u2019s better than drinking or drugging.\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 I look at her, now, fully.\u00a0 She is walnut brown with snow white hair.\u00a0 Just a few years older than me, I wonder if this is my future.\u00a0 Junk shopping and talking a mile a minute to a stranger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-2w0ur118\" class=\"thtTy -PN3w mcSBi iCJIo\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"wnQOX\">She says she paid too much for the shawl she bought, and she really doesn\u2019t need it.\u00a0 I can buy it from her at a discount, she says, half of what she paid for it.\u00a0 I declined the offer, and hoped the conversation would shut down but it did not.\u00a0 Sis got onto the subject of inflation and started talking about high prices.\u00a0 They are coming down, I say.\u00a0 Not enough, she says, and talks about the price of eggs, a sore point for everyone.\u00a0 In October 2014, egg prices averaged $1.95 a dozen.\u00a0 According to the St. Louis Fed, they peaked at $4.83 in January 2023.\u00a0 This August, they were $3.20 a dozen.\u00a0 I have enough sense to know that this sister does not want to hear about supply chains or economic trends, so I just listen, hoping my friends will come soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-dfyhm120\" class=\"thtTy -PN3w mcSBi iCJIo\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"wnQOX\">\u00a0I was mentally drifting from the conversation, when my seatmate jolts me to attention.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I\u2019m voting for Trump, she says.\u00a0 He can handle \u201cthe inflation\u201d better than she can.\u00a0 Really? I say.\u00a0 What makes you think that.\u00a0 Well, isn\u2019t she a communist, sister says.\u00a0 Where did you hear that from.\u00a0 The news, she says.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you watch the news?\u00a0 I laugh.\u00a0 I watch the news nearly 24\/7 I tell her.\u00a0 What do you watch? she asks.\u00a0 Mostly CNN and MSNBC, I say.\u00a0 See, I watch Fox.\u00a0 Humph!\u00a0 I almost spit out my water.\u00a0 And Tucker Carlson says she is a communist.\u00a0 Do you fact check any of this, I ask.\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 They say it all the time, it must be true.
