Police officers in Frisco, Texas, mistakenly held a Black family at gunpoint after a typo led them to believe the family\u2019s car was stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The disturbing incident, which took place on July 23, was captured on multiple officers\u2019 body cameras and has sparked outrage and concern over racial profiling and police procedures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The emotional footage showed members of the Frisco Police Department demanding the family exit their car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family, a husband, wife, son, and nephew, identified themselves, while the boys were identified as 12 and 13 years old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One officer even pointed his gun at one of the children, eventually handcuffing him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At one point during the ordeal, the officer who ran the incorrect plates admitted her mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt looks like I made a mistake. So I ran it \u2018AZ\u2019 for Arizona instead of \u2018AR,\u2019 and that\u2019s what happened,\u201d she said, according to the footage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gravity of the situation hit the husband during the encounter, and he expressed his emotions, saying, \u201cIt could\u2019ve gone all wrong for us, though. If I would\u2019ve gone to reach for my phone, we could\u2019ve all gotten killed,\u201d before walking away in tears. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frisco Police Chief David Shilson issued a statement in which the department admitted its error and vowed to accept responsibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will not hide from our mistakes. Instead, we will learn from them,\u201d Shilson insisted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frisco is a city about 30 minutes north of Dallas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officer who ran the incorrect plates also admitted her error. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Body camera footage captured the conversation between the officer and the father as they attempted to explain the situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officer told the man, \u201cI ran your tag, and it came back to, associated essentially with no vehicle. So I confirmed it with my dispatch \u2013 I\u2019m like, \u2018That\u2019s weird.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Soon after, the footage appeared to feature another police officer saying in the background, \u201cShe ran it out of the wrong state.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officer who made the typo said, \u201cAR, AR is Arkansas, correct?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another officer responded, \u201cIt\u2019s Arizona, though. It\u2019s not Arizona.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, I see what you\u2019re saying,\u201d the officer responded. \u201cThat\u2019s on me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the father and boy got out of the car, the footage showed an officer explaining the mistake to the young boy, who was crying in the back of the car, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re so sorry you had to go through that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The video ended with the officer, who made the error, shaking hands with the husband after he calmed down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The husband told the officer, \u201cIt\u2019s all good.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The department promised a thorough review of the incident and committed to implementing necessary training, policies, and procedures changes to prevent similar occurrences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shilson apologized on behalf of the department and emphasized a dedication to holding themselves accountable and ensuring transparency throughout the investigation process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident has again brought concerns about racial profiling and the use of force by law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
