{"id":2543,"date":"2021-12-09T13:52:04","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T13:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=2543"},"modified":"2021-12-09T13:52:04","modified_gmt":"2021-12-09T13:52:04","slug":"rotten-job-customs-officials-seize-decaying-bushmeat-smuggled-in-at-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=2543","title":{"rendered":"Rotten Job: Customs Officials Seize Decaying Bushmeat Smuggled In At Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Joseph Golder December 3, 2021<\/p>\n<p>Decaying porcupines and antelopes, among a vast quantity of other bushmeat being smuggled into Germany, were seized by customs officials at Cologne\/Bonn airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past few weeks, Cologne customs \u2026 prevented the smuggling of \u2018bushmeat\u2019 in parcels from Nigeria,\u201d Jens Ahland, a spokesperson for the customs office, said in a Dec. 1 statement. \u201cBushmeat is a specific African term for game meat from animals that are hunted in the jungle or in the savanna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to four galagos, also known as bushbabies, a porcupine, and an antelope, we also found large quantities of rotten fish, crustaceans, cowhides, and snails. In total, we found almost half a ton of the mostly roasted or smoked animals,\u201d Ahland said.<\/p>\n<p>The 15 parcel shipments, which weighed between 220 pounds and 600 pounds were on their way to private individuals from Germany, but also France and Belgium, Ahland said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1767121-4\" data-google-query-id=\"CIyD8Nbp1vQCFRUljwodazgOGQ\">\u201cThe animal carcasses, which were only packed in newspaper and plastic bags, lay between large amounts of clothing, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products,\u201d Ahland said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-google-query-id=\"CIyD8Nbp1vQCFRUljwodazgOGQ\">\nIn addition to the animal components, Ahland said, the complete package contents often had to be attended to by veterinarians from the Environment and Consumer Protection Office \u201cdue to strong maggot and mold infestation.\u201d<\/div>\n<div data-google-query-id=\"CIyD8Nbp1vQCFRUljwodazgOGQ\">\n<p>The infestation was so bad that \u201cthe airport border control point of the city of Cologne will be destroyed,\u201d Ahland said.<\/p>\n<p>Bushmeat is described as meat from wild animals hunted predominantly in Africa. It has long been used in local dishes and street foods, and it is also regularly smuggled to other countries to meet ex-pat demand. It can pose grave health risks and is said to contribute to the spread of zoonotic diseases, such as Ebola, via fruit bats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1767121-41\" data-google-query-id=\"CLDz79bp1vQCFRHvjwods90CNg\">\n<p>In an article titled \u201cThe Illegal Commercial Bushmeat Trade in Central and West Africa,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/chronicle\/article\/illegal-commercial-bushmeat-trade-central-and-west-africa\">published<\/a>\u00a0by the United Nations, anthropologist and environmentalist Jane Goodall, wrote: \u201cFor many wealthy African city dwellers, bushmeat is a status symbol proving that they can stay true to their culture. Some of the meat even finds its way to African communities overseas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not only wild animals whose lives are threatened by the bushmeat trade \u2014 people do not appreciate the risks to their own health. There is increasing evidence of the danger to humans caused by handling, cutting the flesh, and cooking certain kinds of wild animals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-14\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1767121-61\" data-google-query-id=\"CL2F8Nbp1vQCFUqajwodaTAFHQ\">\n<p>\u201cThe Ebola virus, devastating more and more areas of West Africa, is thought to be transmitted by fruit bats, initially to chimpanzees, gorillas, and bonobos.
