{"id":2282,"date":"2021-06-27T12:06:22","date_gmt":"2021-06-27T12:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=2282"},"modified":"2021-11-02T14:29:14","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T14:29:14","slug":"africa-struggling-with-3rd-wave-of-covid-19-pandemic-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=2282","title":{"rendered":"Africa Struggling With 3rd Wave Of Covid-19 Pandemic: WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GENEVA \u2014\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Africa is in the grip of a third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, as cases surge weekly and are on course to overtake the second wave at its peak if the trend continues, the World Health Organization<\/span>\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/news\/africa-faces-steepest-covid-19-surge-yet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reported<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on June 24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAfrica is facing a fast-surging third wave of Covid-19 pandemic, with cases spreading more rapidly and projected to overtake soon the peak of the second wave the continent witnessed at the start of 2021,\u201d said a statement from the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails\" class=\" trc_related_container trc_spotlight_widget trc_elastic trc_elastic_thumbnails-mid-article \" data-placement-name=\"Mid Article Thumbnails\">\n<div class=\"trc_rbox_container\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"trc_wrapper_64315\" class=\"trc_rbox thumbnails-mid-article trc-content-sponsored \">\n<div id=\"trc_header_64315\" class=\"trc_rbox_header trc_rbox_border_elm\">\n<div class=\"trc_header_ext\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The number of infections in Africa has been increasing for five consecutive weeks since the onset of the third wave in early May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As of June 20, the continent reported 470,000 new cases, a 21 percent increase compared to the same period during the second wave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The resurgence of the pandemic has been observed in 12 African countries due to poor safety measures, low vaccination rates, increased social interaction, and the spread of new strains, including the more viral Delta variant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The World Health Organization urged African countries to increase efforts to combat the virus and also has extended aid to the worst-hit countries, such as Uganda and Zambia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Currently, just above one percent of Africa\u2019s population has been vaccinated, the organization said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The agency further called on high-income countries, particularly in the European Union, to approve all vaccines from the World Health Organization emergency-use list and prevent unfair movement restrictions for people from countries with limited access to vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In Uganda, one of the countries experiencing the third wave, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced a 42-day country lockdown as cases of new infections surged, overwhelming hospitals that ran out of medical oxygen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a nationally televised address on June 18, Museveni said the country is recording over 1,000 cases daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Acute oxygen shortages have been witnessed in public hospitals across the country, including Mulago National Referral Hospital, the biggest health facility in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The country had\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/country\/uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">recorded<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0781 deaths from 75 537 cases as of June 25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Health officials said five variants of the disease from South Africa, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, India, and Uganda are ravaging the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe know that the ultimate solution to this Covid-19 challenge is to get our people vaccinated. To date, we have vaccinated a total of 869,915 people, which accounts for 90.2 percent of the 964,000 doses received,\u201d said Museveni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOf these, 57,797 [6.6 percent] have received both 1st and second dose.
