As I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve heard, the House is taking up the\u00a0For the People Act<\/strong>\u00a0(H.R. 1\/S. 1) this coming week, with a floor vote likely as soon as Wednesday (Mar. 3). The\u00a0Biden<\/strong>\u00a0administration<\/strong>\u00a0just now put out a\u00a0statement of support for the bill<\/a>, calling it \u201clandmark legislation\u201d that\u2019s \u201curgently needed to protect the right to vote and the integrity of our elections, and to repair and strengthen American democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s something of a race between Congress and efforts in the states to\u00a0suppress the vote and gerrymander to the extreme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Can Congress pass this bill in time to head off the wave of state legislation that would\u00a0restrict the vote<\/strong>, efforts aimed especially at voters of color? We\u2019re now at\u00a0253 bills in 43 states<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>introduced so far this year. They\u2019re based on the same lies about our elections that drove the insurrection.<\/p>\n And will the For the People Act become law fast enough to stop the extreme racial gerrymandering expected to hit states like\u00a0Florida and Texas<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0current redistricting cycle<\/a>?<\/p>\n Congress has the power and the clear constitutional authority to act, and the For the People Act has the reforms to meet the moment.<\/p>\n The bill covers\u00a0voting, redistricting, campaign finance, and government ethics<\/strong>, bringing long-overdue improvements to make our democracy include more of the people it serves and respond to their needs.<\/p>\n The Brennan Center helped develop many of the policies in the For the People Act.
