{"id":1448,"date":"2021-02-16T03:37:35","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T03:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=1448"},"modified":"2021-02-16T03:37:35","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T03:37:35","slug":"biden-administration-to-speed-up-harriet-tubman-20-bill-redesign-delayed-by-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africanamericanvoice.net\/?p=1448","title":{"rendered":"Biden administration to \u2018speed up\u2019 Harriet Tubman $20 bill redesign delayed by Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the Trump administration delayed plans to feature abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spokesman-recorder.com\/2020\/03\/10\/artists-subvert-delay-of-harriet-tubman-20-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1065505\">artists across the country<\/a>\u00a0took it upon themselves to superimpose the heroine\u2019s image over President Andrew Jackson\u2019s in an act of resistance.<\/p>\n<p>But those creative efforts may not be needed in the near future. Today, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the Biden administration is \u201cexploring ways to speed up the effort\u201d to unveil the Tubman $20 bill redesign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Treasury Department is taking steps to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the new $20 notes. It\u2019s important that \u2026 our money reflect the history and diversity of our country, and Harriet Tubman\u2019s image gracing the new $20 note would certainly reflect that,\u201d Psaki said at a White House press briefing on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, then-Treasury Secretary Jack Lew of the Obama administration announced a plan to feature Tubman on the front of the $20 bill, and Jackson\u2014a slave-owner whose controversial legacy also includes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/us\/24f.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trail of Tears<\/a>\u2014would be moved to the back. The bill was set to be released in 2020 in time for the 100th anniversary of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spokesman-recorder.com\/2020\/01\/09\/what-everyone-should-know-about-reconstruction-150-years-after-the-15th-amendments-ratification\/\">19th Amendment<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/womens-history\/19th-amendment-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which gave women the right to vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in May of 2019, the Trump administration\u2019s Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that due to \u201ccounterfeiting concerns\u201d and other technical issues, the redesign would be postponed.<\/p>\n<p>The claims of technical issues ran counter to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/14\/us\/politics\/harriet-tubman-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times\u00a0<\/a>(NYT) report that revealed the basic design of the Tubman $20 bill was essentially finished and could\u2019ve been unveiled by 2020. The NYT also reported that Mnuchin delayed the Tubman note by six years\u2014basically until after Trump was out of office if he were elected for two terms\u2014to prevent Trump from canceling the redesign altogether. As a presidential candidate, Trump called the plan to replace Jackson \u201cpure political correctness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Press Secretary Psaki said further details about the Biden administration\u2019s effort to accelerate the Tubman $20 bill will be provided by the Department of Treasury.
